Washington State Energy Code Training

Attached is the WSEC residential training. Although this training is frequently modified to meet jurisdictional needs and improve quality, here is what you will see or what you saw at a WSU residential energy code training.

Attached is the WSEC non-residential training. Although this training is frequently modified to meet jurisdictional needs and improve quality, here is what you will see or what you saw at a WSU non-residential energy code training.

Energy Code Trainings Offered

WSU Energy Program and the Northwest Building Efficiency Center are offering energy code trainings in various locations throughout the state.

This training is for people who design, review, install and inspect buildings to ensure compliance with the 2006 WSEC. The course will cover both residential and commercial; will explain the building envelope requirements; and cover the prescriptive and component performance methods.

The following are the classes scheduled to date:

2006 WSEC Residential Code Changes Described

The following documents detailed the residential changes included in the 2006 WSEC. Select the appropriate climate zone and building type.

Prescriptive Method (WSEC Chapter 6)

For the Washington State Energy Code, the prescriptive approach is the simplest method of code compliance. Meet all the minimum insulation levels required by one of the options, and the project complies with the building envelope.

The following Excel file has been created to provide a method for documenting compliance with the prescriptive standards. This set of files is for single family and duplex (type R-3 and R-4) construction. Choose either the Climate Zone 1 or Climate Zone 2 file depending on the location of the building.

Component Performance Approach:

These worksheets are designed to document the qualification of building designs by the component performance approach described in Chapter 5 of the Washington State Energy Code 2006 Edition (WSEC). Read the copyright restrictions that appear on the first tab of the worksheet before you begin using the product.

We have tested the worksheets with Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft® Windows®. All functions should work with all Excel versions 95 or later. Excel 95 will work, but the "comments" will not appear. They also work on contemporary Macs. One note, we have seen some formatting problems develop because of default font selections. We have used Arial 10nbsp;point. If you change to this font, all formatting should be good.

CPWorksheets contains a set of four Microsoft® Excel® worksheets. Instructions are available (above) in Adobe® Acrobat® .pdf. When you download the files, all files need to be placed on the C: drive in a folder called "Energy Code". Note: IF excel prompts you to update links click "No" or "Don't Update".

Download the Instructions, CPWorksheet, and Library

  • CPWorksheets Instructions
  • CPWorksheets: Includes all climate zones and building types
  • CPLibrary Note: WSU staff identified a minor error in the Attics tab in the previous version of the library. If you downloaded version 6 of the library, dated May 18, 2007, we suggest you replace it with this version (version and date information are located in the first sheet, labeled "Copyright (year of publication)". Custom library entries can be copied from previous versions of the library into the current version; simply cut and paste.

Note: In order to use the CPWorksheets, you will also need the CPLibrary worksheet. The CPLibrary provides the default component u-factors from Chapter 10 of the WSEC. These are the u-factors necessary to complete most projects. It is linked to the CPWorksheets. CPLibrary.xls must be installed in the same directory as the CPWorksheets, and must be open when data is entered in the CPWorksheets.

If you have downloaded a previous version of the CPLibrary, there is no need to update this file. When the CPWorksheets were originally developed, the CPLibrary was included in the same archive file. Since that time, many users have updated their CPLibrary files with custom components. Continuing to include the CPLibrary in the CPWorksheet archive file could lead to inadvertent erasure of customized CPLibrary files. As a result, the CPLibrary is now available only as a separate download.
