Residential Energy Code Technical Support and Education

Our energy code team provides support to those who use the residential sections of the Washington State Energy Code (WSEC-R).

To determine which version of the WSEC-R a building permit must follow, refer to the date when the permit was applied for and submitted.

If the building permit was submitted after March 15th, 2024, it must meet requirements of 2021 WSEC-R.

The State Building Code Council (SBCC) was created to provide independent analysis and objective advice to the legislature and the Governor’s Office on state building code issues. The SBCC establishes the minimum building (mechanical, fire, plumbing, and energy code) requirements necessary to promote health, safety, and welfare to the people of the state of Washington by reviewing, developing, and adopting the state building code.

The most current and up to date WSEC versions, and all other Washington specific codes, are located on the SBCC website and updated by the SBCC.
