Today’s presentation will be based on the Washington State Energy Code Residential (WSEC-R) 2021 2nd Printing version. This course will cover some the basics of plan submittal and is roughly 1 hour long in presentation. You should by the end of this presentation have a basic understanding of the following:
- Where the code requirements for plan review are located,
- What is needed to submit plans,
- Additional resources you will need to provide,
- What is need for 405.2 modeling plan submission?

Today’s Class will cover water as it pertains to residential dwellings. We will not be discussing fluid dynamics or how to install a sewer drain. Our class will be focused on best practices for desired results in water conservation, efficient water heating, and hot water distribution. We will also discuss how behavior and comfort will be affected by your plumbing design as well as the effects a dwellings layout has on the distribution system. The majority of the material covered today was donated to the School of Design and Construction by Garry Klein and Associates. Thank you for contribution to a better understanding of hot water and how we use it. Key take away topics:

WSEC-R 2021 education and update - Tuesday, July 29, 2025 10:00 AM (Pacific Time) - 2hrs

Today’s presentation will cover the WSEC-R 2021 version (2nd printing). This course will cover the basics of the energy code and necessary documents that you will need in order to satisfy the energy portion of your residential construction permit. The class is an estimated 2 hours in length not counting questions and answer time reserved at the end of the presentation. By the end of the course you should be able to:
- Understand the basics of residential energy code and how to utilize the chapters to find information
- Understand the credit selections and make selections appropriately
- How to utilize the various pathways through the code, prescriptive, modeling, trading off, or alternatives such as Passive House certification
- How to utilize technical support and the many tools offered by WSU-EP to comply with WSEC-R 2021

Welcome to ADU Cubed: A Comprehensive Guide to Three Common ADUs and the Energy Code Permitting Process in Washington State
This guide provides an overview of three common types of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), along with an in-depth look at the energy code permitting process specific to Washington State. We will explore the use of the C3 tool for code compliance, as well as other resources available through the Washington State University Energy Program website. The focus will be on existing building conversions and an example of new construction for ADUs. Credit selections have been drawn from the supporting document titled the “WSEC-R 2021 Energy Code Cookbook."
- How to utilize existing structures for more cradle to grave benefits

- How to complete code forms for three different types of examples
- Better overall understanding how to permit and utilize small cottage or dwellings unit for affordable homes
